Samenvatting

The potential of automatic devices for detecting and photographing speeding vehicles (speed cameras) to provide road safety benefits was examined. Vehicle speed data indicate that the use of speed cameras and warning signs does result in a reduction in vehicle speeds, particularly when combined with publicity. It is likely, however, that these effects are limited to a relatively small area around the enforcement site. It was concluded that it was not possible to evaluate the effect of speed camera use on accident frequencies. The relative deterrent effects of speed camera use and radar gun use are also examined.
