An experimental calculation of the capacity of some road sections of motorways with two times two and two times three traffic lanes and on a highway without a median barrier is described. Although capacity is the most simple idea in traffic, it is a difficult quantity to measure. Using the traffic signalisation systems on the roads around the cities of utrecht and amsterdam, the research facilities on these systems and the development of accurate detectors it was possible to determine simultaneously the maximum traffic flow and to control the measuring apparatus during half a year, twenty four hours per day. With the availability of computer programs and computer facilities it was possible to make a well defined analysis collection of the obtained data. The results of the study show the reliability of the system.
