Novice drivers are considered to be at particular risk of having an accident. This paper describes the results from a study which examined whether it was possible to use assessments made while individuals are learning to drive to predict accident risk once they have passed their test. Questionnaires about driving performance and attitude were completed by pupils and instructors during driver training. Pupils who passsed their test were asked to fill in a further questionnaire after 6 months. An analysis of the results provides evidence that novice drivers' risk can be predicted. Novice drivers were aware that they would be unsafe and it is suggested that this could form the basis for educational intervention.
