Samenvatting

Marginal granular materials can be quite variable in their performance, resulting in a relatively high risk of premature failure. This risk may be mitigated by implementation of laboratory based performance limits for acceptance of marginal granular materials. The primary objectives of this project were to assess the field performance of pavements using typical marginal granular materials from the southwest region of Victoria, such as scoria and tuff and compare laboratory predicted performance from repeated load triaxial (RLT) testing with actual field performance over time and under traffic. The project facilitated the development of a RLT performance ranking methodology for comparison against field performance data. The RLT performance ranking methodology may form the basis of future research and development into the performance of granular materials, with a view towards the development of a RLT performance based measure for inclusion into specifications for acceptance of granular materials.
