Samenvatting

In recent years travelcards have increasingly been introduced by bus operators. This report describes an investigation to determine factors influencing bus users' choice of whether to purchase a travelcard or to pay cash fare for each journey. A binary disaggregate logit choice model was developed using data from surveys of bus travellers in the west midlands and the city of Nottingham. The predicted probability of travelcard purchase based on number of work trips and saving was derived. This gives some indication of the effect on the purchase decision of a travelcard price change relative to cash fares. It is unlikely that the model could be used in other large urban areas but the coefficients in the model may vary with changes in the amount of discount given and with changes in inflation.
