Samenvatting

Starting with the premise that merging from on-ramps into the freeway traffic stream is a very likely cause of congestion and disturbance the authors attempted to predict the presence of acceptable gaps into which ramp vehicles can be merged. Cap prediction was of course affected by speed and lane changes, as confirmed by comparison with aerial photographic data used in validation of the theories. It is concluded, however, that the gap-prediction strategy has good potential application value.
