Samenvatting

In assignment of the Province of Zeeland four questions were answered about a new design of the Zeelandbridge. These questions concerned () the possibility to use acoustic delineation to keep vehicles in the wanted lateral position; (2) the use of pitch-black asphalt for a better perception of other road users; (3) preference and appraisal of several combinations of road and barrier colours; and (4) preference and appraisal of four different barriers, from car and truck perspective. The first and second question were answered with an analysis and knowledge from the literature, to answer the third and fourth question an empirical study with subjects was carried out. The subjects had to execute two subtasks with artificially assembled photographs of the various situations. Firstly they had to sort 30 pictures according to attractiveness. These pictures consisted of a Zeelandbridge situation with factorial combination of six road colours (yellowish, red, green-grey, basalt-grey, porphyry-grey and black) with five barrier colours (white, light-grey, yellow, green and blue). After sorting these out, they had to rate them with a 1-10 attractiveness rating, and then they had to complete the Road Environment Construct Scale (RECL). Secondly the had to do this appraisal with four barriers (with a low railing, with a high railing, with stakes and with a high wind shield) in two vehicle perspectives (car and truck). The answers on the four questions were as follows: (1) acoustical delineation may be an aid to guide lateral position choice; placement both on road-sides and the road axis may be considered. (2) Pitch black asphalt is unsuitable, because it has only to serve as background for other road users, but also as well detectable surface to drive on, even with fog or darkness, in which a greyish colour is better. (3) Subjects prefer and appreciate best a combination of basalt- or porphyry-grey road with a white or light-grey barrier; a yellow coloured barrier also is rated high, which may be better in fog than a white barrier. (4) Subjects prefer and appreciate best a barrier with stakes, or a normal low railing; they dislike a wind shield anyhow. (A)
