This paper describes the protocol and initial results of an innovative driver monitoring program that has been developed at Cloud 9 Shuttle, Inc. in San Diego, California. The program takes advantage of a newly available device that senses excessive levels of acceleration or deceleration and saves a video record of the view out the windshield during such events. Each vehicle is equipped with one of these Video Event Data Recorders (VEDRs) that are periodically inspected by managers. If the device has been triggered its recording is reviewed and management provides appropriate feedback to the driver who can be identified by the time / date stamp on the recording. During the first six months of the trial period this procedure has resulted in a roughly 50% reduction in the number of reported accidents.
