Improvements in the control of infections disease have increased average life expectancy in the U.S. Nevertheless, many people continue to die early in life from infant mortality, accidents and violence. This paper presents the potentially productive years of life lost concept, examines the leading causes of premature death end shows how this measure can be used to target prevention programs and health car planning.
