Samenvatting

Increasing environmental pollution poses a serious threat to the human environment, even on a global scale. It is realized too little that environmental problems have a time scale, so that the effects only become apparent after many years of environmental pollution. Emissions must be cut by 50 to 80% to make sustainable development possible, as defined in the Brundtland report. Freight traffic plays a part in this pollution, also when viewed against the background of the strong growth which may be expected in this sector. The environment will have to be regarded as a production factor the use of which carries a price. Technological developments must be stimulated in order to cope with the growing environmental crisis with regard to freight traffic.
