In this paper, the European Community is considered as a single entity and the overall mortality rates for various age and sex groups calculated for young people between the age of 1 and 24 years. In 1980, about 53000 deaths occurred in the Community between 1 and 24 years old, of which 60% occurred in the 15-24 year age group. Mortality rates were higher amongst males, particularly in the 15-24 year age group.
