Samenvatting

The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) conducted an assessment of the fire safety of metro systems. Twenty-five networks took part, highlighting the low risk of fires in metro systems, the specific nature of metros, and the strategies that can be implemented to reduce the risk of fire. Fire protection measures have three objectives: to protect people, protect assets and protect the environment. UITP recommendations are outlined. These relate to the need for fire safety objectives to be determined, the development of a global safety concept, and the need for the analysis of fire dangers and risks to be included as early as the design stage. Relations with emergency services must be prepared in detail. The safety policy is of importance for both staff and passengers. A no smoking policy should be enforced throughout the system. Any fire must be analysed to establish the causes and consequences and to propose recommendations.
