Samenvatting

'Blackbox' accident data recorders (ADRs) in commercial and public transport have been effective in accident prevention. The differences between an ADR and journey data recorders are outlined. An ADR is concerned with the time immediately before and after an accident. Research projects analysing the effectiveness of ADRs are described: SAMOVAR (Safety Assessment Monitoring on Vehicle with Automatic Recording), Berlin Police Project, and Pinkerton Security and Hatscher Taxi Company in Germany. The design of the electronic VDO Kienzle Accident Data Recorder is outlined. Data storage and data evaluation are described. The ways in which an ADR can contribute to road safety are discussed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123493.
