Samenvatting
The problem of road accidents involving young drivers and alcohol in the United States is examined. A variety of approaches have been tried by one state or another. These have included a) zero alcohol tolerance laws for young people, b) administrative licence revocation, c) eliminating deficiencies in and vigorously enforcing minimum purchasing age laws, d) decreasing alchohol availability, e) carefully targetted youth multimedia community information and education and f) a graduated licence system in conjunction with nighttime driving restrictions. The most effective combination is found to be tough, fair laws, vigorous enforcement and intensive targetted educational campaigns.
