Prevention of accidents at bends on rural roads.

Samenvatting

About 30% of all accidents on rural roads occur at bends. Investigation of "safe" and "hazardous" bends showed that the main difference between them was not radius or visibility distance. It was whether their horizontal alignment was primarilycircular or transitional. This led to the hypothesis that drivers have more difficulty in perceiving the curvature of a transitional bend, which can deceive them into maintaining an excessive speed.
