Samenvatting

The most recent approach to safe winter driving is the studded winter tire, consisting of small rivet-shaped units scientifically arranged in the tread pattern of a tire. Each unit protrudes radially approximately 0.040 to 0.060 in. To provide a gripping action on ice during stopping, traction and cornering. As the tire wears so should the tire stud. This is a critical factor in the concept. To maintain the required protrusion it is necessary to use a very wear-resistive material. It has been found that tungsten carbide of a specific compound will meet this requirement.
