Samenvatting

This paper discusses the need for, method of achieving, and applications of a systematic approach to the identification of locations for bus priority. A recent refocussing of interest in bus priority has been matched with changes in the mechanisms for its accomplishment. Ring-fenced Supplementary Credit Approvals (SCA) for bus priority schemes have become available through the Boroughs' annual Transport Policies and Programme submissions. Additionally, in London, the designation of the Priority (Red) Route Network (referred to as the Red Route Network), specifically aimed at assisting bus operation, offer significant potential for increased bus priority. The subject matter has a practical application as its author is a member of the 'London Transport Bus Priority Team' which works closely with London's Highway Authorities, these being the 33 London Boroughs, Department of Transport and Traffic Director for London (responsible for the Red Route Network), to encourage the introduction of a greater level of bus priority in the capital. To achieve this aim, London Transport has reviewed its entire 1800 mile bus route network and produced a hierarchy of locations and corridors to enable bus priority to be concentrated on bus routes with the greatest need. The paper examines the techniques developed by London Transport to carry out this review and the ways in which the technique is applied to suit the different mechanisms of securing bus priority. (A)
