As the shortage and overload of traffic space in urban areas do not allow further increase of individual transportation volumes, the optimization of public transport has become one of the most important objectives of transportation management concepts in German cities. Reliable adherence of schedules, regular availability of public transport (PT) services and routes free of interference are essential preconditions to reach a higher level of attractiveness of public transport and an enlarged contribution to modal split. As a consulting engineer the author has been involved in several research projects and in the planning and implementation of more than 40 PT priority projects in Germany. This report gives an overview on the state-of-the-art development in Germany with the emphasis on PT priority within urban traffic control systems.
