Samenvatting

Priority techniques for high-occupancy vehicles on freeways and city streets are discussed. It is reported that vehicles using successful priority techniques can save from 5 to 30 minutes in travel time. A principal aim of most techniques has been to increase the number of bus riders and to encourage car pooling. The freeway priority methods discussed are exclusive right of way, normal flow and contra-flow reserved lanes, and preferential treatments at freeway ramps.
