Samenvatting

The problem of road accidents is very important as Greece has one of the highest accident rates in Europe. The problem seems to be more accute for accidents involving pedestrians and two wheeled vehicles. This paper deals with the results of a study, which has been carried out during the last 10 years. The paper contains the following: (1) Age distribution of pedestrians and motorcyclists involved in injury accidents, in connection with the behaviour of the victims and the reasons of those accidents; (2) Factors affecting the motorcyclists acccident rate, namely use of helmet (recently obligatory in Greece, licence of driving, etc; and (3) Gravity and accident risk. The results of the investigation of the investigation have proved the importance of social factors such as behaviour of both drivers and pedestrians (especially elderly persons who have problems in integrating with city traffic); poor driving education; and technical reasons like poor infrastructure in comparison with the enormous traffic growth.
