Samenvatting

During the year 1961, 13 fatal accidents killed 19 persons as a result of head-on collisions caused by wrong-way driving on California freeways. In 1962, wrong-way drivers caused 23 fatal accidents killing 37 persons. Recognizing this problem, an investigation was initiated to prevent wrong-way movements onto off-ramps by means op painted pavement arrows, traffic signs with a message, spike barriers, and other warning devices. The results of the study are presented in this paper.
