The aim of this report was to perform an etiological analysis driving related problems of older drivers, by conducting a literature and accident survey, performing interviews and questionnaire surveys with experts and users. The results are presented in the same order. The literature review clearly takes a standpoint in defining elderly drivers as safe drivers. Furthermore, the heterogeneity of older drivers is often understood as a classification into two categories: those who are unfit to drive, and those who are fit to drive. Driving is, however, a complex task not really defined in a consensus manner and an acquired skill related to many background factors. The older driver heterogeneity thus rather represents a variety of different driving performances than a population consisting of simply “good drivers” and “bad drivers”, which was highlighted in the literature review.
