Samenvatting

The 6th International Symposium on Highway Capacity and Quality of Service (6th ISHC) was held in Stockholm, Sweden from June 28 to July 1, 2011. The symposium, sponsored by the Transportation Research Board under the umbrella of the Committee on Highway Capacity and Quality of Service, AHB40 (Chair: Dr. Lily Elefteriadou), follows successful symposia on the topic, held for the first time in 1991 in Karlsruhe (1991), and followed by Sydney (1994), Copenhagen (1998), Maui (2000), and Yokohama (2006). According to the UN, in 2007, for the first time, more than 50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas ((http://www.unfpa.org/swp/2007/english/introduction.html). Congestion, on city streets, motorways, and highways ever increases along with the need for more efficient design, planning, and operations of the associated facilities. The International Symposia on Highway Capacity and Quality of Service have always provided a forum for the discussion of new insights into understanding the traffic system and its capacity, new methods for evaluating capacity, and new ideas for more efficient and effective operation of traffic facilities. Following the release of the 2010 version of the Highway Capacity Manual, the 6th Symposium with the technical papers and the country reports, builds on the progress since the last meeting. A wide range of topics are presented with papers from various parts of the world, including countries with rapid development and high degree of motorization, both developed and developing. The papers cover every aspect of capacity analysis, and expand upon traditional methods including important aspects such as transit signal priority, user satisfaction in evaluating level of service, environmental impacts, and safety.
