Two seminars were held during one week in May, 1998 at the Hanasaari Cultural Centre in Helsinki, Finland. The environmental aspects of transport, their impact on policy and interaction with safety concerns, were discussed on the basis of a report published by the OECD, and a study made for the World Road Association Committee of the Environment. The seminars were arranged by the Finnish National Road Administration (FinnRA), in co-operation with OECD, the World Road Association (PIARC) and the Nordic Road Association (NVF). The seminars aimed at providing planners, decision-makers and researchers in the field of transport policy, safety and environmental aspects, and road transport, a view of recent development, and supporting intense discussion on the implications of the principles of sustainability for the transport sector.
