This paper presents a comprehensive process for involving the community - residents, retailers, institutions and employees - in local transportation studies. This process is applicable in any community where a local transportation plan is to be developed to resolve transportation problems. It has proven effective in two recent studies in Victoria, one in which there was considerable opposition to change at the outset. This paper describes a complete community involvement process, from the start of the transportation study to after it is completed. Suggestions are provided as to how to carry out each community involvement activity as efficiently and effectively as possible, potential mistakes are potential mistakes are identified, and the benefits of the community involvement process are illustrated by drawing on the experience in Victoria as well as other cities where this process has been used.
