Analysis of available data shows that the nature of stimulus combinations, the particular stimulus dimensions used, affects how stimuli are perceived. Theories of stimulus processing, serial or parallel, depend on how stimuli are perceived and thus depend on stimulus combinations. An alternative mode of processing is proposed. The hypothesis suggests that a stimulus is first processed holistically, as a blob, which is defined.
