Austroads, through the National Transport Commission (NTC), commissioned ARRB Transport Research to investigate the implications for productivity of road transport companies introducing heavy vehicle safety programs, particularly with regard to safe driving practices. The purpose of the project was to assess the productivity benefits achieved by a sample of companies as a result of those companies improving the safety of their own operations. It was anticipated that that the demonstration of a connection between productivity and heavy vehicle safety programs may encourage many more road transport companies to adopt similar programs, resulting in substantial reductions in vehicle operating costs and business overheads for the companies, as well as benefits to the community through reduced road trauma. This paper presents a number of case studies of safety programs that have provided economic benefits to the companies and improved road safety for their truck drivers and the community.
