Samenvatting
Very open asphaltic concrete was first used in 1987 in an experimental road. This involved the construction of a 3 lane test section right across the full width of the northbound traffic lane in the Calandbridge / Dintelharbourbridge section of the Europa road. One of the 3 lanes was a reference section and each lane was about 400 metres long. This article describes the design construction, and instrumentation of the test sections. The first results obtained from the sections are also discussed. The information available is based on measurements of bearing capacity, surface evenness, and stiffness, and upon detailed visual inspection.
