A considerable improvement in both roadway capacity and safety can be achieved by highway automation. Described here is an approach which is based on the following premises:-the individual transportation should be retained-an automatic system should be gradually introduced-only limited access highways would be automated-any system should be generally applicable to personal transportation units.
