Samenvatting

At present there are 198 km of motorways in operation in the Slovak Republic. The preparation and construction of motorways in the territory of the Slovak Republic has been implemented in line with the concept of motorway network development since 1959. The length of motorway was determined by the Resolution of the Slovak Government No. 269/2955 of April 25,1995 as a part of the report on development of motorways and international roads in the territory of the SR. The selection of motorway routes is a long-term process lasting several decades. The basic corridors have been definitely determined and decisions on construction closure have been taken. The main aim is to assure the road traffic of the most loaded domestic traffic streams throughout the territory of the state and to prevent diversions of traffic streams from Slovakia. The geographical location of Slovakia in the centre of Europe requires that the traffic routes may become a functional part of the main traffic corridors in certain directions. For these the shortest possible European connections are in preparation. This fact was taken into consideration at the 2nd Pan-European Conference held in Crete in 1994. According to this concept there were adopted 3 multi-modal corridors crossing Slovakia. (A)
