In March 2012, the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) was assigned by the former Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development to formulate a so-called "reform of the medical-psychological assessment". A major element was the implementation of a project group which should identify issues for scientific and technical achievements of the medical-psychological assessment (MPA). The project group was lead by BASt and consisted of 16 members, composed of scientific experts, representatives of the assessment centres for driving fitness, representatives of driver rehabilitation courses, practising traffic psychologists, the association for traffic psychology, the association for traffic medicine and representatives of relevant authorities. The project group started in November 2012 and finalises its work with this report. The present report documents the results and proceeds of the project group. The main areas for scientific and technical achievements of the MPA are described extensively, and the corresponding results and recommendations of the project group are displayed. An emphasis was laid on concrete recommendations to be realized in the future. The recommendations concern for instance improvements of the process to coordinate the relevant scientific and technical regulations for the MPA, the implementation of an independent institution to check the scientific soundness and suitability of tests used in the MPA and inventions and the transparency of the MPA process.
