The UK Government's aim is a transport system that works for everyone, including the most vulnerable of our road users, i.e. pedestrians, cyclists,motorcyclists and disabled people. The UK Government's aim is to cut the number of deaths and serious injuries from road accidents by 40% overall and by 50% for children over the period 2000-2010. The paper outlines measures to improve safety and accessibility for vulnerable road users. These include: cycle lanes and routes; educating drivers regarding the needs of cyclists; road markings, such as advanced stop lines (ASLs), which allow cyclists to position themselves ahead of motor vehicles at signalised junctions; signalised pedestrian crossings; and tactile paving surfaces to assist visually impaired road users. An outline for a Manual for Streets is presented which gives guidelines for making streets safer, more accessible and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists through good design.
