Samenvatting

The rationale and empirical evidence supporting the development of a computer-based tool for screening the functional abilities shown to be the strongest predictors of at-fault crashes among older drivers are presented in this article. Clinical and home-based applications of the screening tool (the DrivingHealth Inventory and AAA Roadwise Review) are described, with a discussion of its strengths and limitations in each context. The underlying premise throughout is that an integral role for functional screening, leading up to and during an older individual's participation in driving skills rehabilitation programs, may be anticipated as the demand for such services increases in the years ahead.
