Drivers ordinarily get 80% of their information from their eyes when driving, and this fact indicates the great importance of visual information for drivers. In this paper, we assert that driving simulators for the evaluation of visibility of road environments can be used as tools for the efficient and reproducible accumulation of data. Images used in the ROAD VISUAL ENVIRONMENT SIMULATOR (RVES) are given added information (distribution headlight patterns, road surface patterns, etc.) on RVES images that are taken by CCD image sensors in road environments. A characteristic of the RVES is the possibility of reproducing the luminance that is measured in road environments. Using the example of RVES, this paper details a measurement method for road environments and a method for making simulators. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123380.
