Samenvatting

This article describes the application of a corrosion-protection system in bridge construction at a new resort of Durrat Al Bahrain (named after the most perfect pearl) in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Thirteen bridges are involved, requiring effective long-term protection in the marine environment. A spray-applied methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin-based system, Eliminator, was chosen. This consists of a primer, Eliminator membrane and a tack coatto bond to the asphalt surfacing of the deck. Advantages of the spray-applied system include the ability to coat details such as upstands and parapets. The high moisture tolerance of MMA resin enabled application in a wide weather window, and accommodated delays in the work caused by heavy rain. The site staff had flexibility in choosing which area to treat in turn. Other bridge deck waterproofing systems include a machine which allows spraying of polyurethane by automated process; surfacing which uses stone andsynthetic resins; and a corrosion protection system that involves shot blasting followed by protective primer and paving layers.
