The recycling of pavement materials demands knowledge of the composition of the material. For natural reasons old pavement materials have great variations in composition regarding grading curve and binder content. Present sampling methods are adjusted to new production and are not suitable for old pavement material. The number of necessary specimens for determination of a parameter e.g. binder content, are dependent on the variation in the testing results and the required probability level. In this work the procedure in sampling from existing roads and stockpiles is presented, to make it easier to handle the great variations in old bitumen surfacings. The method is directed to sampling during the recycling of asphalt material, but it can also be used in other connections e.g. during quality control.
