Samenvatting

The Public Rights-of-Way Access Advisory Committee (PROWAAC) was formed by the U.S. Access Board in 1999 to develop guidelines for accessibility within public rights-of-way. As a culmination of a 7-year effort, PROWAAC released a special report called Accessible Public Rights-of-Way, Planning and Designing for Alterations. This article provides an overview of the content of the report and how it might be useful to the transportation industry. The report can be considered as best practice guide until final federal rules are published. The book's seven chapters provide an introduction to PROWAAC and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and address alterations, the design process, general design solutions, design solutions for hypothetical situations, and model sidewalk design. A compilation of additional resource information sources is included in the report.
