A description of the traffic aspects and the psychological aspects that are relevant in determining whether a traffic situation is acceptable or not for children of certain age groups is given. In part I, a questionnaire is presented which serves to identify the traffic characteristics of problem situations for both pedestrians and cyclists. Part II contains a description of the traffic tasks which pedestrians and cyclists (not moped riders) have to perform in the main problem situations. A number of results of previous studies are mentioned, concerning the development of psychological capacities in children with regard to the traffic task.
