Samenvatting

Berlin's increased attractiveness as a capital, seat of government and business center puts a heavy demand on traffic planning and control: After a Europe-wide invitation to tender, the current Senate administration for urban development awarded the VMZ Berlin consortium, comprising DaimlerChrysler Services AG and Siemens AG, with the contract to develop a central traffic management system. The project is being implemented as a public-private partnership, in which the District of Berlin will bear the investment costs and private industry will operate the system for 10 years. The role of VMZ Berlin is to record and evaluate the traffic situation in Berlin; and all types of urban transportation - individual and public passenger transportation and also commercial transportation - have been incorporated in the concept. The data are then used to generate traffic information and prepare management decisions for improving the situation of traffic in Berlin.
