Samenvatting

This paper provides evidence on public transport demand response to changes in fare level and structure, and bus-kms run in Spanish cities. Aggregate and disaggregate elasticities have been estimated with different econometric specifications with results that suggest two types of imbalance: within the fare structure, and in the combination of fare and service level. The standard fare structure in Spanish cities consists of cash fare and multiple-ride ticket. The main conclusions of this study are that unilateral cash fare increase would lead to higher operating revenue without loss of patronage, and that patronage could be increased, given the budget constraint, by moving to a higher fare/service level pattern.(Author/publisher).
