Samenvatting

Roughly 10 years ago, U.S. highway fatality numbers reached a plateau (between 39,000 and 42,000) and have remained static ever since. In order to restore progress in highway safety, the transportation community must find new, cost-effective methods that can be implemented in a timely manner. The development of these safety measures should include an awareness of needs in different localities and funcational road classes. After development, the innovations must reach the transportation professionals, who can then implement and use them to break through the safety plateau. This article focuses on the FHWA communication component of this needed technology transfer.
