Samenvatting

Many of the changes which occur as part of the aging process may produce a diminished ability to avoid accidents, a lowered injury threshold and an increased susceptibility to the effects of injury. This paper describes the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and Injury Severity Score (ISS) and applies them to examine the effect of age on injury outcome. It concludes that for the particular injury combination studied, the fatality rate for the elderly may be more than three times as high as that for the general accident population.
