This paper describes the results of the development and testing of an Automatic Emergency Call system (AEC) called STORM. This is part of the DRIVE 2 QUARTET project. The system uses a global positioning system (GPS) for accurate accident location, the GSM (Groupe Speciale Mobile) telephone system for data transmission. The STORM project trial was undertaken in Stuttgart in 1993 and 1994. It ascertained the reduction in time taken to undertake a rescue using the system. Over 2,300 accidents were simulated during the trial. The reliability of the system was also monitored. The success rate both for the simulated accidents and for 44 real accidents was 91%.
