The railroads' role in the movement of merchandise freight. Paper presented at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Highway Research Board HRB, Washington, D.C., January 1974.

The purpose of the paper is to examine ways in which railroads might improve service and improve capital utilization without increasing long-run total costs. Rail freight costs and truck costs are compared for the purpose of considering the effects of a shift from truck to rail.
