The paper describes two studies to determine the effectiveness of "wide" (i.e. sufficient to incorporate sheltered right turn lanes) raised median strips in reducing accident rates on roads wide enough to accommodate them without reducing the number of traffic lanes. It was concluded that the installation of a wide raised median strip to replace a painted flush or narrow raised median is highly effective in reducing road accidents. Indeed, with low capital and maintenance costs, it is among the most cost effective of accident countermeasures.
