Samenvatting

From international literature on the subject of road markings and accident reduction the report considers before and after experiments and discusses the setting up and carrying out of research on an examination of the effectiveness of edge and centre markings on traffic behaviour. Included in this research was work on sideways vehicle spacing on carriageways having varying widths (10 m and 7.5 m), without markings, with edge lines and with both edge and centre lines, by day and by night. It was shown that edge and centre lines have a positive effect in the sense that they reduce the distance to the right hand edge of the carriageway. It follows that by using edge lines the danger of a head-on collision is reduced, the visibility of pedestrians and parked cars is improved, visibility of pedestrians and parked vehicles is increased and at night the hazard of dazzle is reduced, since the optical orientation is no longer directed towards the centre line (opposing traffic).
