Studies of the incidence of drugs in drivers involved in road traffic crashes require that body fluids be screened for as wide as a range of drugs as possible. Undoubtedly the methods best suited to drug screening are those based on chromatography, mass spectrometry or a combination of these techniques. The recent development of a new generation of mass spectrometer, the tandem mass spectrometer or MS /MS, now provides a way of eliminating much of this chemical noise. The application of such an instrument to the detection of drugs in blood is described.
