Comparison of traffic intensity data shows that many similarities exist between different days. This fact can be used to calculate consequences of incidents for the total travel time in a system. This results in insight into travel time loss that occurs in some practical cases. Other system characteristics can also be calculated such as the marginal savings that follow from decreasing the clearance time by one minute. Several optimization problems are also treated. Examples are planning road maintenance and determining the intervals in which the availability of special teams, aimed at reducing the clearance time after an incident, yield maximum results. (A)
