Filter drains are often installed at the edge of the road in order to facilitate rapid removal of water from the road surface or to prevent water flowing into the road surface. In locations where vehicles wander off the carriageway onto the drain material, stones can be easily displaced onto the road carriageway causing a potential accident risk. A novel approach is to make use of shredded scrap tyres as a filter drain material. The research showed that binder-bound, rubber materials have a role to play in the highway construction industry in terms of conserving aggregate stocks, utilising a waste resource and minimising a potential hazard for the road user.
