Samenvatting

INTERPORT, a project within the DGXIII Transport Applications Programme, waterbome sector, demonstrates the potential of automatic identification in port terminals for different types of load units (AEI), drivers and vehicles (AVI). Automatic identification enables a real-time control of the terminal handling and is the key to paperless procedures. The technology tested in the project is radio frequency tags and smart cards. INTERPORT applies this technology to existing problems and integrates these approaches with the current operational and information structures and systems of port terminals. INTERPORT started in 1/1996 and was concluded in 02/1999. This paper reports the findings from tests carried out in six INTERPORT test sites in Europe. It highlights the recommendations and guidelines given to other users for the implementation of a system as tested in INTERPORT and it discusses the approach currently applicable for full-scale implementations.
